The anonymous artists
work as a unified body and mind
at carving empty spaces out of rocks.
The first generation strike with the chisel
and the precision of the strike paves the path
for the journeymen to join the mission
of giving a definition to emptiness embedded in rocks.
Somewhere along the axis of time
as their labor begins to bear fruit
there arises a desire to create a Presence among the rocks.
The anonymous art energizes the effort and the rock bears a form:
the form of a being whose life on earth
ended, and its existence proclaimed
that emptiness lives; it lives and offers a refuge to all beings.
The silence of the Ellora Caves hums with the sound of the empty space

Time and space, mind and body, thinking and doing, born of the insatiable generative proclivities of the mind, those dichotomies excruciatingly cut through the very heart of stillness, unremitingly carving out of emptiness that impenetrable chasm, that abyss of suffering between the existence of desire and the desire for existence, that makes of attachment to identity the ordinary abode of quiet despair.
